A European Project aims to develop an automatic laser based system for upgrading
nonprime photovoltaic cells while still in factory

  • This R&D project, known as REPTILE, will allow to recover defective cells produced by Silicon PV industry. Up to 8% of cells are non-prime, due to the complex processing and high productivity required.
  • Cells could not be upgraded in factory up to now, and had to be sold as low-efficiency items, or be recycled outside of the production flow.
  •  This apparatus will allow the production of a new family of photovoltaic modules, thanks to low cost manufacturing of custom cell shapes and sizes, for all kind of integrated PV: BIPV, signalling, infrastructures or vehicles
  • This research is supported by the Seventh EU Framework Program, and partners from four different countries are involved.
